Summer Reading 2018 Kicks Off June 11 at 12:00 pm

Our Summer Reading Program theme this year is “Libraries Rock!”

Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the library anytime from June 11 to July 2! Just come by and show us your valid library card (or sign up for a new one – free!) and we’ll set you up with a reading log and program brochure. Everyone ages 0-18 is welcome to participate.

This year’s reading challenge is the same as last year’s – for every 10 minutes read during the program, you can add one sticker to your reading record. It takes approximately 8 hours to complete a reading record, and any reading counts – newspapers, websites, books from the library, books from home, eBooks, hardcover books, paperback books, etc. When you’ve completed your reading log, turn it back in to the library to receive a Calhoun County Library swag pack and an entry into the drawing for a brand new Kindle Fire tablet! Each subsequent reading log completed will earn an extra entry into the drawing (but only one swag pack per participant).

The program will run through July 20 and will feature many free, fun programs for all ages, including geology with the Arkansas Geological Survey, movies, coloring, board games, sheet rock candy, DIY musical instruments, and more. A full schedule of programs with dates, times, and age recommendations can be found here.

Participants must hold valid Calhoun County library cards and adhere to all library policies. Children younger than 11 must have a guardian (16 or over) present at all times. All supplies will be provided for all programs. Each completed reading record counts as one entry into the drawing for the Kindle Fire, and a winner will be chosen at random on July 23, 2017 at approximately 12:00 pm (to be notified by telephone).

Hampton Lions Club Donates to Summer Reading Program

On Tuesday at the last meeting of the school year for the Hampton Lions Club, the members voted unanimously to donate $700 to the Calhoun County Library to fund the Summer Reading Program. This money will allow us to provide supplies and snacks for the planned 15 programs and activities for Calhoun County’s youth this summer, and we are so grateful to all the members of the Lions Club for their support. Among planned programs for this summer are making sheet rock candy, painting kindness rocks, movie and board game days, and visits from both the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Arkansas Geological Society. We will also be doing a reading challenge like last year’s, and everyone who completes the challenge will be entered to win a brand new Kindle. Sign-up for Summer Reading will begin on June 11, and the program will run through July 20. A full (tentative) schedule of activities can be found on our website at www.calcolibrary.com/summerreading2018.

Planning for Summer Reading Program 2018

Planning for Summer Reading Program

Jamie and I are hard at work planning this year’s summer reading program. Like last year’s program, kids ages 0-18 can complete the challenge for a small prize and entry into the drawing for a larger prize. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” and most of our programs will be related to “rock” somehow. We’ll be doing Kindness Rock painting, DIY musical instruments, making sheet rock candy, headphone cord covers, and much more. We are also going to be showing a movie once a week (with snacks!). Is there something you’d like to learn about or a craft you’d like to make? Do you have a great idea for a summer reading challenge prize? We’d love to hear from you if so! Email or call us ([email protected] or 870-798-4492). The full schedule of programs and our wish list of supply donations will be available soon on our website at www.calcolibrary.com/summerreading2018.

Lots of people have stopped by to pick up some of our free paperbacks after last week’s article. We have plenty more, and this is a rotating collection that is always available so if you have some paperbacks to get rid of or would like to pick some up, you can always stop by during our regular hours.

Free Tax Forms @ Your Library

Did you know you can get your tax forms printed for free? The Calhoun County Library offers free printing of tax forms (instruction booklets not included) from now until April 15. Library employees cannot offer any assistance or advice with selecting the proper forms, filling them out, or filing them (beyond regular technical assistance). The library is open 12-5 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you know which forms you need, send us an email at [email protected] or a Facebook message and we will have them waiting for you when you get here!
