History & Mission

History:

In September of 1959, thanks to the efforts of Miss Sallie Lou Wilson and a donation of books from the Arkansas State Library, the Calhoun County Library opened to the public in a small second-floor room of the county courthouse. Several years later, in 1966, the library moved across the street to the building where it is currently located and Miss Wilson began expanding the collection. Under Miss Wilson’s direction, the library became a vibrant part of the Calhoun County community. Even after her death she has continued to be a source of great momentum for the library; the library space was more than doubled by expanding into the building next door with funds Miss Wilson left to the library in her will.

Over 45 years after its initial establishment, the Calhoun County Library still provides its patrons with materials to fulfill their recreational, educational, and informational needs. The library currently houses a collection of over 20,000 volumes that is continually updated and refreshed and has recently begun offering eBooks and digital audiobooks to patrons. Three computers and a WiFi connection provide free public Internet access, and a large children’s area provides space for reading, drawing, or working on homework. Come by and check out the great resources your county library has to offer!

Mission:

The mission of the Calhoun County Library is to provide materials, programs, and services that allow access to information, facilitate lifelong learning, and serve the cultural and recreational needs of all members of Calhoun County.
